Proficiency testing for blood-gas quality control.
We have conducted a voluntary, community blood-gas proficiency testing program, with use of tonometered human blood, for 32 analyzers located in 16 laboratories. Instruments initially showed inaccuracies as large as -30.8 to +17.3% for po(2), and -14.0 to +42.9% for pco(2), but inaccuracy and imprecision decreased in most laboratories during the program. For a typical 15-week period, mean group...
متن کاملThe history of proficiency testing/quality control.
The history and origins of proficiency testing of clinical laboratories are reviewed. Since the introduction of proficiency testing in the late 1940s, dramatic improvement in laboratory performance has been demonstrated. Nonetheless, the poor performance found two decades earlier was summoned to support the passage of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1967 (CLIA '67).
متن کاملA stable blood product for pH-blood-gas quality control.
We describe how to prepare, store, and use a hemolyzed blood product for simultaneous pH, pCO2, and pO2 quality control. Tonometry of the blood product with two oxygen and two carbon dioxide concentrations resulted in consistent and reproducible values during 38 weeks. The resulting pH values were consistent and reproducible, demonstrating the metabolic acid-base stability of the blood product....
متن کاملUse of equilibrated blood for internal blood-gas quality control.
We have used equilibrated human blood for blood-gas quality control since 1970. In blood equilibrated 24 h after shedding, gas tensions are stable for 4 to 6 h at 0 to 4 degrees C; each control specimen is analyzed several times during that period to resolve malfunctions, etc. Three-fourths of all errors in gas-tension measurement detected with equilibrated blood were detected with the highest-...
متن کاملAn Automated Data Management System for Blood Gas Quality Control
This report describes the development and operation of an automated blood gas quality control data management system that has been recently field tested in 110 blood gas laboratories. The software is designed for centralized data processing and review, but it also enables participating laboratories to monitor and analyze their routine quality control performance individually or as a group. This...
